Honey for coughs
Honey has been used for centuries to coat the throat, reduce irritation and ease coughing. A 2018 study found that honey may be more effective than over-the-counter treatments for children’s coughs, especially in reducing cough frequency and severity. Manuka honey offers unique properties that make it particularly effective, as it contains high levels of Methylglyoxal (MGO) - a compound linked to antibacterial and antimicrobial effects giving Manuka honey its scientifically proven ability to fight bacteria and promote healing.
Strep A
Over the last few years, Strep. Pyogenes (more commonly known as Strep A) have shown increased resistance to certain antibiotics used for the treatment of pharyngotonsilitis in children. This increased bacterial resistance to traditional antimicrobial agents has prompted the use of natural products with antimicrobial properties such as Propolis and Manuka honey. Propolis is now often referred to as a ‘natural antibiotic for sore throats’ for this reason.
Viruses
Early research suggests Manuka Honey may have antiviral effects. The naturally high levels of MGO in Manuka honey have been proven in a recent lab-based study to inhibit the virus that causes Covid-19. Researchers found MGO boosted levels of powerful immune system cells to fight the virus while keeping potentially dangerous inflammation at bay. Manuka honey offers a great natural way to help shore up all your family’s defences.
