Why upgrade to Monofloral Manuka Honey?

What is Monofloral Manuka?

Under New Zealand law there are two classifications of Manuka honey. Monofloral is the highest specification and contains a purer grade of Manuka honey with higher levels of important naturally occurring compounds. The classification of a Manuka honey will always be written on the label.

What’s the different between Multi and Monofloral?

Honey bees in New Zealand are wild animals, and as such they’re free to roam the countryside as they please. Because we can’t control where a bee flies, it’s possible that they may have visited other floral sources as well as the Manuka bush. That’s why the New Zealand Government created the two classifications of Manuka to analyse this.

Multifloral means that Manuka may also contain other floral sources in addition to being wholly or mainly Manuka. Whereas Monofloral means the Manuka contains a purer grade, with more of the all-important compounds needed to be classified as genuine Manuka.

It's all about location

Our beehives are carefully placed in special locations around New Zealand where the Manuka bush flowers. Much of our Monofloral Manuka stock comes from a remote area of mountainous land owned by our founder which is almost completely untouched by humans. Our communities of bees are left to do their job just as nature intended, foraging in the Manuka bushes which cover the mountain.

Our expert beekeeping team visit every few weeks to check on the progress of the hives. There are multiple reasons why this location produces such potent Monofloral honeys but our team say the high temperature in the area, combined with a low level of moisture in the soil has helped create the perfect conditions for the bees to develop this high grade.

Why upgrade?

Monofloral Manuka Honey has higher levels of MGO (Methylglyoxal). It is MGO which provides Manuka honey with its anti-microbial properties. Therefore Monofloral Manuka Honeys have a higher anti-microbial effect than a Multifloral variety.

What do experts say?

Health expert and TV GP, Dr Hilary Jones explains “the greater the MGO number on the pot, the higher the rating”. While Health Author Dr Michelle Braude also recommends a Monofloral variety to her clients.

Does Monofloral Manuka taste different?

Because Manuka honey is a natural product it can vary in taste and texture form batch-to-batch.

Monofloral Manuka Honeys with higher levels of MGO may taste less sweet, more earthy with a woody flavour, which is because of increased levels of phenols.

Which rating should I choose?

Our Monofloral Manuka range begins at 100 MGO and goes all the way up to 1100 MGO. Because these high grade batches are very rare, not all bee keepers are able to harvest them all the time.

We receive new supply from New Zealand weekly, so if the grade you wish to order is not in stock, please keep checking back.
